Portrait photography is often associated with couples, families, weddings, or major life milestones. Yet today, more and more men are choosing to step in front of the camera. Not necessarily for social media or work, but simply for themselves.
And honestly, I think they are right.
Taking Photos of Yourself: An Ego Thing?
A photoshoot can sometimes be seen as something superficial. Yet many of the men who contact me come with very different reasons:
- marking an important life milestone
- rebuilding confidence after a difficult period
- keeping a memory of themselves at a specific moment in life
- celebrating a change
- simply doing something for themselves
Photography then becomes less about appearance and more about memory.
Many Men Think They Are Not Photogenic
This is probably the sentence I hear the most:
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I’m not comfortable in front of the camera.”
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I’m not comfortable in front of the camera.”
“I’m not photogenic.”
And honestly? That is completely normal 🙂
Most of the people I photograph are not professional models. They have never done a photoshoot before, or only a few. The goal is not to play a role, but rather to create an environment where you can gradually forget about the camera.
My goal is simple: to create memories that feel like you.
Masculinity Is Not Limited to One Image
For a long time, men’s portraits often showed the same thing: seriousness, strength, rigid posture. Today, things are evolving, and that is a good thing.
A portrait can also show softness, vulnerability, calm, reflection, joy, or sensitivity.
There is no single way to be a man, and that is also what makes these sessions so interesting.
A Portrait Session That Reflects You
Every session is different. Some take place in the city, through the streets of Downtown Montreal or Old Montreal. Others happen in nature with a calmer atmosphere, or in the studio for more specific projects.
Some people prefer something raw and spontaneous. Others look for a more editorial atmosphere.
The goal remains the same: creating images that reflect who you are.
What If It Was Simply a Moment for Yourself?
We often think about taking photos for others: family, partners, events. But sometimes, it can also be meaningful to create images for yourself.
Not to prove anything. Simply to keep a memory.
